Wool is a high-performance, environmentally sustainable alternative to traditional weed and mulch mats. Our pure wool mats stop the growth of weeds, protect against erosion, and gradually release moisture into the soil to create ideal growing conditions. As they biodegrade over time, they release nutrient elements into the soil, encouraging plant growth.
Our wool mats are also a very practical choice; they’re naturally pest and fire-resistant, and are simple to use, even for inexperienced gardeners!
Pure wool is the lowest carbon footprint mulch mat product available, and is 100% biodegradable. It’s the right choice for your garden, and for the world.
The wool mats that make up Pure Wool Weed & Mulch Mats are produced from 100% raw New Zealand wool, direct from the farm, avoiding the synthetic contaminants and non-biodegradable remainders that can occur in recycled wool products. Our mat production process means we don’t need to add glue or strengthening materials, just natural, sustainable wool.
Simply place the mat on the ground in your garden or raised garden bed, first removing all vegetation from the area. Secure the weed mat at each corner with landscape anchors, weed mat pins, wire staples or our very own biodegradable pegs, inserting them into the ground through the mat using a hammer. For large areas, secure the mat at the corners and every 1 to 1.5 metres. Using a sharp craft knife, simply slit the mat to create an opening through which to plant.
Pure Wool Weed & Mulch Mats are available in a pack of 300mm or 500mm squares or can be purchased in a roll for larger projects. Depending on the size and shape of your planting area, you may need to trim your mat to size. We recommend using sharp secateurs or a pair of garden hand shears - wool is tough and can get the better of your kitchen scissors!
Our mats can be used in projects of all sizes, from home gardens to commercial landscaping projects. Mats are also a great choice for hanging baskets and tubs, as the moisture retention properties of wool stop the soil from drying out.
Our mats are made with 100% New Zealand grown and sourced wool in manufacturing partner plants around New Zealand. We’re proud to work with local manufacturers around New Zealand and reduce our carbon footprint by sourcing and manufacturing products locally.
The mats are held together by a low-energy process called needle punching. This gives the mats the strength they need to stay together, with no glue or other materials required.
The mats generally break down over a 12-18 month period, releasing nutrients into the soil as the wool fibre layers biodegrade. The length of time they break down over can vary depending on the environmental conditions and thickness (GSM) of the wool mat used.
No, our mats are proudly 100% New Zealand wool. We collect wool directly from the farm and clean it (via a process called scouring) to remove grease and impurities. The wool is made into mats by a needle-punching process, meaning the mats hold together without any glue or additional material.
